You could have up to thirty days after your deadline to renew your tags. However, you can still receive a ticket for expired tags, within that thirty day period. In some cases, your car can be impounded and towed. This will leave you without transportation and facing additional expenses.

Methods for Renewal

There should be more than one method to renew your car tags. You might be able to use the Internet or mail in your renewal form. In some states you may go through the entire process over the phone. Of course, you can go to a tag agency or in some states, your local DMV.

Online Renewals

This is perhaps the most convenient method to use. In many areas, this can be done any time of the day or night. You can go to the website and pay for the transaction with a credit or debit card. To simplify the process, have your renewal notice with you when visiting the website. You may need to enter current tag information. Many states also require that you submit insurance information. If so, you may need two different numbers. The first set of numbers will be your auto insurance policy numbers. You may also need the five digit number of your insurance company. This can usually be found on your insurance card. If not, you may need to call your insurance office to find out the numbers.

Mail in Renewals

This process is very simple. Simply mail back the renewal form and follow all of the instructions. You will receive your new tags or sticker in the mail.

Phone Renewals

In some areas, you may be able to renew by phone. Some people may feel more comfortable giving their personal information, this way. In the first three methods, you will have to wait a few days to receive your new tags and registration. It is best to do this at least a week ahead of time.
