This may save you the frustration of an extra trip to the Department. You may need to send off for a birth certificate or a copy of your social security card. This can take as long as a week. However, if you know exactly what you need, you will be fully prepared.

You can also find out information from the website. If you cannot find the site, go to a major search engine and input “Department of Motor Vehicles” and then place your state in the search box, also. This should bring up a link to the website.

At the website, you should be able to find out information on fees and identification needs. It may easier than calling, as you will not be placed on hold. In some states, you may be able to make an appointment for your visit from the website.

If you are taking someone for their driving test, you should bring something to read. It can take a while to take the road test, as others may be first. However, if you can make an appointment, things will go faster and much more smoothly. In any manner, you may need to wait for while, so wear casual and comfortable clothing, if possible.
